There’s a story behind every smile.

An expression that is used to indicate ‘pleasure or amusement’, something that can be expressed in many ways by an individual and perceived and understood in many different ways by another. It is a simple gesture that has so many different meanings, a simple gesture that is so diverse and beautiful.

There is a reason that every smile has been expressed, whether it’s in conversation with the presence of people or expressed intrinsically. The value is unique to the individual, whether it is laughing at a joke or smiling at a loved ones actions. Every smile is unique, both to the individual and to the world.

A smile indicates an emotion, something that can only be completely felt by the beholder. It can be acknowledged similarly to the original emotion by an external empathetic source, yet fully understood by the beholder. Life is full of motorways where everybody is going in the same direction or a roundabout where people group off into different directions. We can be grouped together by certain values yet every car represents a different person. We all go on different journeys and different speeds in different cars with different people. Yet we all express similar gestures and outtake similar actions, because at the end of the day we’re all human. We all express human emotions, yet our emotions are all so diverse and original that we need to recognise the beauty in our differences, no matter how big or how small.

Breathe, take a step back and open your eyes; open your ears, open your soul and most importantly open your heart. Open your heart to possibilities, to yourself and to others. Don’t rush just consider, consider what’s important to you; consider what makes you, you. Look, gain a 360 degree perspective of yourself, your soul, your being and let it guide your actions and most importantly let it guide your vision. When you look forward what do you see? Do you see progression or do you see yourself stationary? Listen to the sound of your heartbeat beating in your chest when you experience true happiness, the rush of what it means to be alive. Allow yourself to listen to your own thoughts, to your own feelings and take action. Learn to listen to prioritise what’s important to you and your being. Smell so you can remember, scent is the most powerful memory trigger. Remember what it is that allows you to wake up in the morning, brush your teeth and put your shoes on to walk outside ...

I found myself when I found these people. I understood what it truly means to be human, to be connected and to love someone purely because of their existence. They’ve allowed me to wake up every single morning and ask myself what’s really important. From a country of complete conflict, hate, discrimination and violence where in the space of 100 days, one million people were violently slaughtered due to their ethnicity, I now see a country functioning on nothing but love, hope and respect for each other with the primary focus of creating a pathway to societal progress which fundamentally functions based on community. Four years ago I was fortunate enough to meet a 90 year old woman named Marcienne, who in 1994 witnessed the slaughter of five of her children and the love of her life.
